Unit 10 Learning Aim A: Comparative Film Analysis

Image
I have been asked to analyse a range of film clips, or short films, from different genres in preparation for a series of programmes on fictional film genres. My critical analysis of the purpose, format, narrative structure, visual storytelling, genre and audience of my chosen films, and genres, will be used by the production team for a new series to inform the content of one or more of their programmes. I have been asked to present the outcome of my analysis to the production team.     I have chosen to analyse fiction films from the thriller genre as well as the sci-fi genre, I have picked two Hollywood feature lengths and two experimental short films (one from each genre). The thriller films I have picked to analyse are ‘The Killer,’ directed by David Fincher, (Hollywood feature length film) and ‘Poison,’ directed by Wes Anderson (experimental short film). The sci-fi films I have picked to analyse ‘Venom,’ directed by Ruben Fleischer (Hollywood feature length film), an...

Change of Idea

Whilst I had a whole idea planned for this project and filmed this, the final result didn't turn out the way that I wanted it to. I had a couple of logistical issues - things such as the film being set in a fun house yet filming in a classroom, this meant that the room needed decorating yet this wasn't possible. Another thing that led me to change my idea after filming is the cast I had for my initial film 'house of fun.' I had 7 cast yet by the time it came to filming I had 3 cast members drop out due to clashes with other school events, in order for my story to work I swapped roles around and got some last minute volunteers. Having 7 cast members meant that this was quite a challenging environment to film in and keep everyone silent so I wouldn't get any background noises etc. Another challenge I faced with my cast was the costumes, one of my characters was suppose to be a clown, he just had a rainbow curly wig on and a mask - this initially looked okay but after...

Director's Commentary

Image
This is an extract of a document I made of what media skills I demonstrated in my film and why I made certain parts in my film the way I did. This document shows the time stamp, media techniques used/short description of the scene and the reason I chose to do this in order to create a certain meaning for audiences.

Production Log

Image
This is my whole production log from the very start of my project, this began when I generated my first idea which didn't end up being produced very well and therefore led me to another idea. This document shows the flow of work and effort put into the whole of my production process. I have added a column for dates to show how long tasks have taken etc as well as a column for notes which allows me to look back and reflect/remember what needed adding/removing to make my whole film look better.
